Many of us who work for a company that have to share commercial van use will be aware of the problems that van share has to offer. How many times have you got to the van that you were going to use for the day only to find it’s been damaged, untidy or even got things missing from it?
Well many companies now offer a check list that employees should complete before taking the van out on site to ensure that it starts in a good condition. You may be able to suggest such a list to your employer if you have become fed up of having to use a van in poor condition and then getting blamed.
Such things that should be check should be:
Is the Tax Disc Valid?
Having a tax disc that has expired can result in a fine. By checking this you are making sure that you are not in the firing line when it is checked by the police.
Trye condition
It is important that the tread on the tyres are checked before heading out to site both as a legal requirement and to help with stopping distances and the prevention of an accident.
Seat Belt Condition
This is done at the time of the MOT it can always be a good idea to check them before a journey. This will ensure that they will work in the event of an accident.
Cleanliness
Although this isn’t a requirement to ensure that the van is safe to drive, it is a good idea that the van is clean when you get it. You wouldn’t leave the van with food and rubbish on the floor so why should you have to start off that way?
Complete a ‘Check Out’ List
This will document who takes the van on what days and at what time. You can also document the miles on the van so that people do not use it for personal errands at the weekend or out of work hours. You may also find that many vans are fitted with tracking devices so this can be monitored via a computer and internet connection.
Lights
Making sure that all lights on the van is working correctly will reduce the chance of you being stopped by the police. Check break lights, indicators, full beam lights, dip lights and the fog light.
By carrying out these few measures you will reduce the chance of something being wrong with the car and ensuring that the vehicle is safe to use.
